Watch and Learn
Before I started thinking about having a baby, my exposure to what birth looked like was extremely limited. I remember a health teacher sharing a video in middle school that was terrifying, bloody, and very medical.
I closed my eyes. It was too much.
Of course, the mainstream media doesn't help much either. Birth is typically shown as an emergency. Women are being rushed to ERs, husbands are screamed at, pain and fear seem inevitable.
For a long time, I was convinced that I would never allow myself to get pregnant, lest I have to experience these traumas, too.
Thankfully, when my desire to create new life became intense, I also began to come across a different view of childbirth. These are some of the films that really helped me to see the process of birth in a new light.

Helpful Documentaries
The Business of Being Born - the first birth documentary I ever watched and was exposed to an extraordinary amount of new information about how birth typically happens in the U.S. and how birth can be.
Orgasmic Birth (Watch it here!) - most women can't imagine describing birth as something "orgasmic", but why not? This film explores the emotional, spiritual, and amazing power of birth to bring us to new states of ecstasy. This is my favorite film about birth.

Pregnant in America - my least favorite birth documentary as it is not as well done and too focused on the main couple, but it is worth watching if you're trying to absorb everything about birth possible.
